HVAC equipment is often installed close to large 480 V services, where available fault current can be high. A chiller, rooftop unit or VFD panel must have an SCCR suitable for its installation point - and that rating must be supported by the complete equipment design.

Calculate the fault current at the equipment terminals and compare it with the marked SCCR. If the available current is higher, the answer is not simply to install a fuse upstream; the panel must be evaluated using permitted current-limiting or combination-rating methods.
Class J and Class CF fuses are attractive in HVAC controls because they combine high interrupting ratings with current limitation and compact installation options. Class L fuses cover higher-current feeders.
· Chillers and cooling towers: use feeder protection sized for compressor and motor starting while coordinating with the unit's internal branch protection.
· Rooftop units: time-delay fuses can accommodate compressor inrush, subject to the unit nameplate and manufacturer instructions.
· VFD-driven pumps and fans: branch fuses protect the feeder; a high-speed fuse inside the drive is selected by the VFD manufacturer to protect power semiconductors.
Emergency and legally required systems: complete the required selective-coordination study for the applicable system, rather than relying on a single generic ratio.
